About nonwoven geotextiles

  • Geotextile:  Geotextiles are textile structures such as fabrics, mesh materials, nonwovens, nets, and composites, which are deployed in various areas of underground construction for separation, support, protection, filter and/or drainage functions.
  • For nonwoven geotextiles, needle punch technology is in the forefront, and now it is most widely used.

  • Principles of needle punch technology:

Needle punching is a technology to produce a fabric in which fibers are mechanically entangled by reciprocating barbed needles through a moving batt of fibres in a needle loom. The feed system introduces the batt between the lower bed plate and the upper striper plate by nip rollers or aprons, whilst a nip roller system draws the consolidated web away from the needling zone.

Difference between woven & nonwoven geotextiles:

  Woven Geotextile  Non Woven Geotextile
Fabric and Raw material
  • Monofilament, multifilament slit film fabricated
  • Base fiber is Polyester, Jute
  • Continuous filament staple fiber
  • Base fiber is polyester,
    PP& PE
Process
  • Weaving
  • Needle Punched
  • Thermal bonded
  • Spun bonded

Commonly used GSM

  • 330 GSM
  • 180-200 GSM
Applications
  • Sub-grade reinforcement, embankments, woven geogrids for ballistic reinforcement
  • Reinforcement, separation,
    Embankment are major
    applications
  • Roads, highways as
    separation, paving fabric

Product characteristics

  • The desired characteristics of nonwoven geotextiles are that they should be excellent in:
  • Bursting strength
  • Impact strength
  • Puncture strength
  • Tear strength
  • Tensile strength
  • These nonwoven geotextiles also should withstand against
  • Biological degradation
  • Chemical degradation
  • Hydrolysis degradation
  • Oxidative degradation
  • Radioactive degradation
  • Sunlight (UV) degradation

Application

Application of Nonwoven needle punched Geotextiles are:

  • Separation
  • Filtration
  • Drainage
  • Reinforcement
  • Barrier fabrics for roads, rails, erosion control and irrigation

Raw materials

Manmade fibres:

  • Aramid
  • Bicofibres
  • Glass fibre
  • PA (Polyamide)
  • PAN (Polyacrylonitrile)
  • PET (Polyethyleneterephthalate)
  • Polypropylene
  • PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene)
  • Viscose rayon

Natural fibres:

  • Coir
  • Jute
  • Sisal

Technology
Mainly needle punch technology is used but occasionally thermal bonded & chemical bonded technologies are also being used.
