About woven geotextiles

  • Geotextile:  Geotextiles are textile structures such as fabrics, mesh materials, nonwovens, nets, and composites, which are deployed in various areas of underground construction for separation, support, protection, filter and/or drainage functions.
  • For nonwoven geotextiles, weaving technology is in the forefront, and now it is most widely used. Generally, wide looms with both creel & beam are used to manufacture the woven geotextiles. In this case, monofilament yarn, multifilament yarn, & tape are used.
  • Woven geotextiles are preferred for applications where high strength and high modulus in the principal directions are more important considerations than similar properties in all other directions.

Difference between woven & nonwoven geotextiles:

Woven Geotextile   Nonwoven Geotextile

Fabric and Raw material

  • Monofilament, multifilament slit film fabricated
  • Base fiber is Polyester, Jute
  • Continuous filament staple fiber
  • Base fiber is polyester, PP& PE
Process
  • Weaving
  • Needle Punched
  • Thermal bonded
  • Spun bonded

Commonly used GSM

  • 330 GSM
  • 180-200 GSM
Applications
  • Sub-grade reinforcement, embankments, woven geogrids for ballistic reinforcement
  • Reinforcement, separation, Embankment are major applications
  • Roads, highways as separation, paving fabric

Product characteristics

The desired characteristics of woven geotextiles are:

  • Ability to resist clogging
  • Excellent elongation at break
  • Excellent permittivity of water
  • Good grab tensile strength
  • Puncture resistance
  • Trapezoidal tear strength
  • U.V. resistance
  • Very good Mullen burst

Application

Woven geotextiles are mainly used in

  • Coastal works,
  • Embankment and in or near dams
  • Waterways, and
  • woven geogrids for reinforcement

Raw materials

The main raw materials for woven geotextiles are monofilament or multifilament of

  • Polyester
  • Polypropylene
  • Jute
