- Battery separator is used as a porous piece of fabric which is positioned between the positive and negative electrodes in a
- Liquid electrolyte,
- A gel electrolyte or
- A molten salt battery.
- The main function of this separator is to put a stop to physical contact of the positive and negative electrodes while helping as an electrolyte basin to permit free ionic transport.
- This separator can be classified into two part according to its structure such as
- Micro porous and
- Non-woven.
- An ideal battery separator should have the properties of
- High porosity,
- Small mean pore diameter,
- Oxidation resistance,
- Puncture resistance,
- Thermal dimensional stability and
- Freedom from harmful chemical contaminants,
- Favorable voltage characteristics,
- Retardation of antimony transfer,
- Electrochemical compatibility and
- Prevention of dendrite growth.
Raw Material:
- The main raw materials used for the above process are PVC, PE, glass mats normally of wool.
Technology:
- The absorbent glass mats (AGM) are manufactured by
- Dry-laid process,
- Wet-laid process,
- Spun-bond process or
- Melt-blown process
- All these processes consist of three steps:
- Making fabric webs,
- Bonding webs and
- Post-treatment
- Normally in major machine manufacturer designs their machine where web making & web bonding took place simultaneously.
Application
- Industrial batteries
- Automotive batteries
