   Drive belts

Overview Supplier
  • Drive belts are normally used to convey rotating motion between two shafts.
  • A belt drive includes
  • One pulley on each shaft and
  • One or more continuous belts over the two pulleys.
  • The friction between the belt & the pulley is used to transfer the motion from driving pulley to the driven pulley.
Product description:
  • The transmission belts can be classified as
    1. Flat,
    2. Vee,
    3. Poly-Vee,
    4. Timing/synchronous belts etc.
  • Vee belts (or V Belts) are the most widely used belts. V belt drives replaced flat belt drives for many applications because higher power could be transmitted with more compact drive arrangements.
  • There are different types of V-belts; some of them are
    1. Wedge section V belts;
    2. High capacity narrow V-belts;
    3. Hexagonal V-belts;
    4. Multi rib poly V-belts;
    5. Automotive timing belts;
    6. Auto wrapped belts in wedge and classical types; and
    7. Variable speed drive belts for two wheeler applications.
  • Generally three types of V belts are commonly used:
    1. Raw –edged,
    2. V-ribbed, and
    3. Wrapped.
  • They come in five standard sizes A, B, C, D and E.
  • The top width of A is 12.7 mm (1/2 in) and that of E is 25.4mm (1 in) and the thickness varies between the different sizes.
  • When power transmitted is heavy multiple belts are used in pulleys having a number of grooves as required.
  • The selection of the type of V belt depends on
    1. The power capacity of the drive and the small pulley's shaft speed (rev/s),
    2. Acceptable limits of the speed ratio,
    3. Pitch length of the belt(s), and
    4. Diameters of the two pulleys etc.

Type of Raw materials

  • Woven fabric or cord that is reinforced as ply in the drive belt is primarily made of polyester, Nylon, and cotton.
  • The technical textile requirement is 26 % of the value of the belt.
Raw Material % by weight
Carbon black 29%
