The viscose speciality fibre Viloft from the Bavarian viscose fibre manufacturer Kelheim Fibres has been honored with the Lighthouse award for its bio-degradable wet toilet tissue project. The award is presented annually to outstanding projects in the field of environmental technology that have already been implemented and that are commercially viable.

More than 20 different proposals, ranging from very simple, clearly defined application ideas to visionary future products, were submitted by equally varied people.

Fibres to be showcased include Viloft, Galaxy and Electra, all of which are used in production of various nonwoven fabrics for applications in wipes, tampons, etc.

Kelheim Fibres, the largest supplier of viscose fibres for the manufacture of femcare tampons, is exploring new area of applications and suitability of its hydrophobic Olea fibre for emulsion separation. In a series of tests over the next months, Kelheim will analyse how these hydrophobic properties influence the separation of water or oil mixtures.

In a joint project called “AlBioTex”, researchers at the Hohenstein Institute, B.R.A.I.N AG, and Kelheim Fibres GmbH have successfully developed wound dressings made from bacterial alginate. The aim of the project was to develop a biotechnological process to produce alginate and then process it into fibre-based products for use in wound dressings.
