Scientists at the University of Bristol are working on innovations on composites - seen as the materials of future because of their ability to reduce weight, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. One of the area, the university is focussing on is through-thickness reinforcement (TTR), a procedure to enhance strength of laminated composites.

Mitsubishi Rayon Carbon Fiber and Composites (MRCFCAC) has acquired US based Gemini Composites LLC, a company engaged in design, engineering and prototyping, using forged composite technology. MRCFCAC, which is a subsidiary of Japan headquartered Mitsubishi Rayon Co Ltd (MRC) has acquired all the shares of Gemini, currently owned by its founder.

US scientists make silk sensor to speed new infrastructure

Scientists in the US have developed a damage sensor which makes viewing the damage at a crucial part of a composite possible. The nanoscale damage-sensing probe known as a mechanophore has been made for the composite made of epoxy and silk. The team is now planning to explore how such probes could be used in other composites for different applications.

JETCAM launches composite material location software

JETCAM has launched a new software which allows tracking of composite material's location and life. The software, CrossTrack MTL, will help composite manufacturers to recreate their material locations virtually. It is available on a monthly subscription basis.
