Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) has designed a textile fabric for the armed forces, which has self cleaning, super hydrophobic and anti bacterial properties. Additionally, the fabric has other properties like UV protection, softness, breathability and biodegradability, apart from blood repellency, which can also prove helpful for the medical profession.

According to a leading daily, the Tamil Nadu based institute, used cotton as the base material, which was modified by fabricating a copper coating through reduction of copper acetate by employing ascorbic acid at room temperature.

“By coating Stearic acid over the copper-coated fabric, the surface of the fabric became water-repellent,” MG Sethuraman, chemistry professor at GRI, was quoted as explaining to the daily.

Sethuraman also added that the fabric could also separate an oil-water mixture, due to its super-oleophilic nature of the cotton.

“Tests against gram positive and gram negative bacteria too showed very good anti bacterial activity as well as blood repelling property,” he informed. (AR)
