Toyobo to double airbag fabric production capacity

December 30, 2016 - Japan

In response to growing demand, Japanese automobile airbag maker Toyobo is doubling airbag fabrics production capacity by investing around ¥10 billion or $85.1 million. The doubling in airbag fabric production will be done across all its plants in Japan, Thailand, China and the US and will be spread over four years, beginning from fiscal 2017.

In addition, the company plans to build a new production facility in Germany at its existing joint venture with Indorama Ventures.

In the US, Toyobo will add machinery that weaves nylon yarns into airbag fabrics and also add new resin coating machines that strengthen the fabrics.

It will also add more machines and equipment at its other plants in Japan, China and Thailand, which will see fabric production capacity nearly doubling at each of these plants. In the process, Toyoba expects to double sales from the ¥10 billion it reported in fiscal 2015. (AR)
