Atlantis tidal turbine deployed

March 07, 2017 - United Kingdom

A 1.5 megawatt-Atlantis Resources tidal turbine has been installed at the MeyGen site in the Pentland Firth. The AR1500 turbine has hit full power and is already exporting to the grid. Its three rotor blades have been manufactured by AC Marine & Composites. The Pentland Firth is a strait separating Orkney Islands from Caithness in Scotland's north.

"This project has been significant for us, and has provided a platform for the future of ACM&C by enabling us to purchase purpose-built machinery and further strengthen our supplier relationships. Our workspace now contains industry-leading composite machinery for the rapid manufacture of resin infused and pre-preg composite components," Alex Newton, director at AC Marine & Composites, said. AC Marine & Composites is an industry leader in the manufacture of structural and aesthetic composite components.

Robert Bray, blade development manager, Atlantis Resources, said, "AC Marine & Composites were chosen not only for their technical know-how but their willingness to work with us throughout the design and development phases, contributing many ideas and suggestions along the way." (SV)
