About Stitch Bonding:

  • It is a mechanical nonwoven bonding process for built-up fabric. The stitch-bonding technique entail bonding of either yarn layers or fibre webs or smooth substrates by means of a system of stitches.
  • In the practice, either rows of needles travel together to penetrate the substrate being processed to form stitches, and these are made from the material in the substrate itself or by means of yarns that are fed-in separately.
  • There is a variety of processes used to bond webs through loop formation by means of threads or fibres. The main groups are warp-knitting, stitch-bonding (which is based on warp-knitting) and weft-knitting.
  • Stitch-bonding, plants and products manufactured this way are called
  • MALIMO in Germany,
  • ARACHNE in the Czech Republic and
  • ATSCHW in Russia.

History of Stitch bonding:
Historically seen, warp-knitting and weft-knitting are much older than stitch bonding. The first two, stated above, primarily focus on a mechanical way of manufacturing yarns into fabrics. Within the recent 40 years, stitch bonding has turn out to be technologically significant in the perspective of nonwovens that are made by loop formation.

Stitch bonding process:
Stitch-bonding comprises two processes, which are,

  • On the one hand, sewing (i.e. the stitching and bonding of areas, e.g. warp yarns and webs) and,
  • On the other hand, knitting (i.e. the simultaneous formation of loops of threads or, respectively, fibres)

Applications of Stitch-bonded fabrics are:

  • They keep us cozy and warm when made into blankets, are used as the
  • Headliner in our cars,
  • Can be used as cleaning and wiping cloths, and
  • Provide adhesion when used as backings for adhesive tape.
  • They can also be used in the home as soft furnishings,
  • Carpet backings and
  • Upholstery materials
