Berry Global Group has come out with a sustainability strategy through an initiative called Impact 2025. As part of the initiative, Berry will focus on products, performance, and partners with a long-term plan for sustainability for the year 2025. For example, it will minimise product impacts by measures such as optimising designs and lightweight products.

In the area of products, the company will also work on designing 100 per cent of packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable, sustainable sourcing, increasing recycled content, and encouraging the development of renewable materials.

The company will focus on performance with an aim to minimise operational impacts (normalised for production). One of the area will be climate change with an emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas emissions 25 per cent by 2025 versus the company’s 2016 baseline, reducing landfill waste 5 per cent per year, and reducing energy and water consumption 1 per cent per year.

There will be a focus on Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) to prevent resin loss through OCS. The company will implement OCS at acquisition sites within the first year.

The sustainable strategy also talks of maximising positive impacts by engaging partners on key issues such as ending plastic waste by expanding and modernising waste infrastructure to increase recovery and prevent loss of plastic into the environment, and engaging the plastics industry on OCS.

For limiting global warming, the strategy advocates increasing renewable energy, expanding the use of plastic in place of alternative materials, and promoting science-based targets. (SV)
