Coir geo-textile will be used to fortify a 60-km stretch of the Kuttiyadi canal in Kerala under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Forty three village local self-governing bodies or panchayats, three municipalities and the Kozhikode city corporation will support the eco-friendly conservation initiative.

About 68,578 square meters of the relatively cheaper coir geo-textile will be required for the project, which will be provided by the Kerala State Co-operative Coir Marketing Federation Limited (COIRFED), according to a report in a top south Indian English-language daily.

The project followed a survey conducted by the irrigation department to assess water supply problems and the degradation of the 40-year-old canal at many stretches. (DS)
