Notus Composites supplies for 'Museum of the Future'

Notus Composites (UAE) has completed delivery of fire retardant (FR) epoxy prepreg for Dubai’s Museum of the Future, one of the most complex façade projects. The company has supplied over 600,000m2 of prepreg materials for the building’s external façade panels. The museum has 1024 cladding panels built with Notus’ multiaxial glass and carbon prepregs.

The two-year build programme culminated in the museum’s online unveiling on December 2, 2020. In a region that is renowned for pushing the limits in architectural design, the Museum of the Future in Dubai is one of the most complex façade projects. Designed by architectural firm Killa Design, and conceived as a composite structure from the outset, the engineering marvel depicts the benefits of building with advanced composites.

Notus Composites, an innovative prepreg solutions provider based in the UAE, has worked with the Museum’s two façade manufacturers, Affan Innovative Structures and Nova Composites, to provide the composite materials for this unique exterior cladding.

Due to open in 2021, the Museum of the Future features 1024 cladding panels that have been built using a combination of Notus’ multiaxial glass and carbon prepregs. These EPFR-609 prepregs and NE11FR surfacing films deliver exceptional fire performance and have been approved by the Dubai Civil Defence (DCD).

Each panel is unique in shape as the Arabic calligraphy covering the façade is moulded into each individual panel, with the black letters also forming the glazed window penetrations in the façade.

The multiaxial prepregs were laminated in CNC milled moulds at Affan’s and Nova’s factories in Dubai, before glazing elements, LED lighting systems and stainless steel surface finishes were added, and the panels delivered to site for installation.

Notus Composites, a new entrant to the prepreg market in 2015 and winner of the Ras Al Khaimah Free Trade Zone Business Excellence Award for Best New Startup, is especially well known within the ME region for its products’ outstanding fire performance. Its epoxy prepregs have been tested and certified to all of the key architectural industry standards and the company is the only manufacturer in the world whose epoxy FR prepreg materials have successfully passed the challenging NFPA 285 test, as well other key tests such as ASTM E84 and EN13501-1.

After initial large scale projects in wind energy, the company continued to expand into civil engineering and architectural composites in 2016. As well as working on the Museum of the Future, Notus has also supplied prepreg materials for the flagship Rolex Store in Dubai Mall, carbon fibre palm tree shading at the prestigious Nakheel Mall, numerous EXPO 2020 pavilions and a showpiece chandelier for a well-known hotel on Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah.
