Scott Bader, manufacturer of a wide range of synthetic resins and polymers for many different markets, has made TEXICRYL 13-319, the latest HASE (Hydrophobically-modified Alkali Swellable Emulsion) polymer in the range of rheology modifiers.

The pure acrylic polymer is activated by neutralising to pH 8-9 and provides a dramatic pseudoplastic rheological effect to the water-based system.

TEXICRYL 13-319 is supplied at 30 per cent solids content and the typical addition level would be less than 0.5 per cent to prevent settling and sagging while maintaining levelling properties. These properties are achieved through polymer modification; incorporation of hydrophobic groups to associate with particles at low shear, dissociate at high shear and then recover in a controlled manner, according to a press release.

TEXICRYL 13-319 is compatible with a broad range of coating and adhesives components and provides excellent pigment suspension.

Although TEXICRYL 13-319 can be used alone in very high viscosity formulations, benefits are found when used in combination with other Scott Bader rheology modifiers. TEXICRYL 13-317, another pure acrylic polymer is designed to influence the higher shear rate viscosity of the system, therefore reduce spattering on application. The formulator can therefore achieve a no-compromise balance of these properties through fine tuning the addition levels of TEXICRYL 13-317 and TEXICRYL 13-319. (GK)
