Mandatory Jute Packaging Bill placed before Parliament

Textile and Jute Minister, Abdul Latif Siddiqui placed the Mandatory Jute Packaging Bill, 2010 before the Parliament on September 21.
The Bill, aimed at curbing environmental pollution occurring due to use of synthetic packing material, contains proposals, stipulating compulsory use of jute bags for packaging certain products meant for sale or marketing and some regulations.
As per one of the sections of the bill, no one would be allowed to sell, dispatch or supply any of the products specified in the Bill, except in jute packing. However, the Bill does contain a proviso that, if need be, the government has the authority to allow any person to use packaging material, other than jute.
Further, the Bill also carries a proposal for constitution of an eight-member Advisory Committee under Chairmanship of the Textile and Jute Secretary, to give suggestions with regards to the use, distribution, manufacturing and sourcing of jute packaging.
