India lifts ban on export of personal protection equipment

February 10, 2020 - India

India has lifted the ban on the export of personal protection equipment, including masks. With this move, critical items like surgical masks, disposable masks and all kinds of gloves except those made of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), which China urgently needs, can be exported by Indian manufacturers to help China fight the coronavirus epidemic.

The export of these items was banned by an earlier order dated January 31 this year.

A February 8 notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the department of commerce has amended the Export Policy of Personal Protection Equipment/masks. The notification “has been amended to the extent that items such as surgical masks/disposable masks and all gloves except NBR gloves are allowed freely for export,’’ DGFT said in its order.

Indian manufacturers had raised production of such items keeping in view the rising demand.
