In Inner Mongolia Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) is taking an active part in the fight against desertification, with donating and planting trees to support “Million Tree Project”, a local initiative.

SCA has donated 2,000 trees to combat climate change in Inner Mongolia, China, as part of the “Million Tree project” that was created by Shanghai Roots & Shoots, a local non-governmental organization. The aim of the project is to plant one million trees in Inner Mongolia by 2014 to help stop desertification and offset China's greenhouse emissions.

Earlier this spring five employees from SCA's Asia Pacific Headquarters and SCA Hygiene North Asia went to Kulun Qi, Inner Mongolia to plant poplars and rebuild the forest.

The Inner Mongolia region is dry, flat and dusty. If the trees are planted correctly and monitored properly, they will have a 75–85 percent survival rate, according to Sun Litao, Forestry Manager of the Million Tree Project, who provided a short training session onsite about planting poplars.

SCA hopes that this tree-planting activity will encourage more people to pay close attention to environmental protection.

The team also made time to Kulun Qi LiuJiaZi Primary School where they donated books and talked to the students about sustainability and the importance of protecting the environment.
