Terram, a market leader of geosynthetics has presented its three core products, Terram Geocells, Bodpave 85 and Tubex which can help protect, manage or prevent flooding to the cabinet minister John Whittingdale during his visit at Terram.

Terram Geocells, are 3D honeycomb structures that can be expanded from flat and filled with a variety of materials and helps to protect urban areas during periods of flooding. They offer a quick, easy to install and reusable alternative to sandbags and are typically deployed on riverbanks.

Bodpave 85 paving grids are made from recycled plastic and are filled with gravel, providing a high-strength surface for areas such as car parking and running tracks. They offer a permeable alternative to concrete. Bodpave works as a part of a sustainable urban drainage system and helps to manage water flow in the event of flooding.

Tubex tree shelters, produced at Terram's sister company Tubex provides an environmentally friendly way to control flood water impact on cities.

“It is hugely impressive to visit a company like this – which is a market leader and producing world beating products. Flooding is going to become a more regular and more severe problem than we have had to deal with in the past. Flood defences are going to become increasingly important, and products like these can play a vital part in protecting people's homes,” said John Whittingdale, the secretary of state for culture, media and sport.

“Terram has equipment here that is capable of producing flood defence products quickly, efficiently and cost effectively that are probably as good as anything in the world,” Whittingdale added.

Whittingdale was also shown Terram's manufacturing site in action, with a unique high-tech needlepunch line that manufactures market leading ground stabilisation and separation products. Whittingdale toured facilities, met staff and watched a live demonstration of Terram products in action during his visit.

The visit ended with a live demonstration of Geocells and Bodpave 85. A miniature lake was constructed out of Geocells before the water within was pumped onto a Bodpave lined surface, demonstrating the product's permeability.

“We're very proud of our range of flood defence solutions, as well as our status as a successful British manufacturer. It was great to introduce John to our modern facilities and to gain his insight into flooding issues, which are an increasing concern to all,” said Nick Hurt, Terram senior director. (NA)
