KICT develops new structural strengthening process

The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology has developed a new structural strengthening process using a non-combustible carbon textile grid and cement mortar. It can double the load-bearing capacity of structurally deficient concrete structures, increase their lifespan threefold, and reduce construction costs by about 40 per cent.

Korean scientists make wearable piezoelectric harvester

Scientists at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed a highly flexible but sturdy wearable piezoelectric harvester using the simple and easy fabrication process of hot pressing and tape casting. The energy harvester, which has record high interfacial adhesion strength, will help create embedded wearable electronics.

S Korea allows limited exports of non-woven fabric

South Korea recently allowed non-woven fabric, a key material used in filter masks, to be exported as the supply in the country has stabilised. The ministry of trade, industry and energy, however, capped exports at 15 per cent of February production levels. It will also be temporary, with the lifting of the ban to end on January 5 next year.

KIST produces flame-retardant CFRP using tannic acid

Scientists at Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) have developed a flame-retardant carbon-fibre-reinforced composite material using plant-originated tannic acid. The team has also come out with a process for eco-friendly recycling of the material, which is widely used in aerospace, automotive, shipbuilding, and sports equipment industries.

South Korean team develops new luminescent technology

Scientists at the Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST) have developed a new electro-luminescent(EL) technology comprising textile-fibre-embedded multiluminescent device, which may be used in wearable devices in the future. The new device improves efficiency by emitting light more flexibly and stably than the existing devices.

Korean team develops reusable nano-filtered face mask

Amidst shortages of personal protective equipment, scientists at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have developed a reusable nano-filtered face mask. The nano-filter maintains excellent filtering efficiency even after hand washing, they say. They have used a technology that aligns nanofibres in orthogonal or unidirectional directions.
