Manufacturer of specialty chemicals Ashland Global Holdings has made a binding offer to acquire a composites resin manufacturing facility, owned by Reichhold Holdings International. The facility employs approximately 50 people and manufactures unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) used in a variety of end markets like construction and transportation.

Kordsa, a leader in tire, composite, and construction reinforcement technologies and manufacturer of industrial nylon and polyester yarn, has announced that Ali Calıskan, serving as the chief operating officer of Europe, Middle East, and Africa of Kordsa since July 2015, has been appointed as the new CEO of the company after serving 31 years at Kordsa.

Toray Industries has consolidated its North American Carbon Fiber Composite Materials businesses by merging Toray Composites (America) and Toray Carbon Fibers America into a single business entity. The merged entity has been named Toray Composite Materials America, with the merger expected to better enable meet demands of Toray customers.

Scientists have developed "smart" composite leading edges for aircraft wings which have embedded heaters to protect the wings against ice build-up, while reducing weight and boosting efficiency compared to existing systems, under a joint project involving University of Sheffield, and Boeing and aerospace companies Meggitt PLC and AeroTex UK.

Scientists at the University of Bristol are working on innovations on composites - seen as the materials of future because of their ability to reduce weight, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. One of the area, the university is focussing on is through-thickness reinforcement (TTR), a procedure to enhance strength of laminated composites.

Mitsubishi Rayon Carbon Fiber and Composites (MRCFCAC) has acquired US based Gemini Composites LLC, a company engaged in design, engineering and prototyping, using forged composite technology. MRCFCAC, which is a subsidiary of Japan headquartered Mitsubishi Rayon Co Ltd (MRC) has acquired all the shares of Gemini, currently owned by its founder.

Scientists in the US have developed a damage sensor which makes viewing the damage at a crucial part of a composite possible. The nanoscale damage-sensing probe known as a mechanophore has been made for the composite made of epoxy and silk. The team is now planning to explore how such probes could be used in other composites for different applications.
