Scott Bader’s Crestabond structural adhesives have got ClassNK certificates for the fire protection requirements of the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) 2014/90/EU. Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, known as ClassNK or NK, is a ship classification society. It has roughly 250 million gross tons or some 20 per cent of the world’s merchant fleet on register.

The Crestabond M7-05 and M7-15 structural adhesives have qualified for MED/3.1 – Primary decks covering, MED/3.18 a – Surface materials and floor covering with low flame-spread characteristics (a) Decorative veneers, and MED/3.18 c – Surface materials and floor covering with low flame-spread characteristics (c) Floor coverings.

ClassNK offers diverse technical services including the survey and classification of ships and marine structures based on technical independently developed rules, statutory surveys performed on behalf of more than 110 flag states, management system certifications based on ISO and other international standards, as well as other services to help safeguard ships, their crews, and their cargo, while protecting the marine environment. With roughly 250 million gross tons or some 20 per cent of the world’s merchant fleet on register, ClassNK is one of the world’s largest classification societies in terms of gross tonnage under class. ClassNK is a global organisation with a network of over 130 exclusive surveyor offices around the world.

Ingrid Skalleberg, Scott Bader’s group product manager for Adhesives, said: “Gaining these MED approvals is a significant step forward for the growth of our structural adhesives in the ship building industry. We are delighted to offer industry leading MED approved structural adhesives to the ship building industry worldwide.”

Previously, Scott Bader’s Crestabond M7-05 and M7-15 had gained NK’s certificate of approval for applications involving the bonding of steel. Also, for GFRP bonding applications, Crestomer 1150PA, 1151A, 1152PA and 1153PA have gained NK’s certificate of approval.
