Dongyang develops super fibre 'Uhmwpe' yarn

South Korean company Dongyang Miracle, which has led Korea's technical textile industry, has successfully developed 'Uhmwpe' yarn, which it said is one of the strongest fibres among synthetic fibres.

“Miracle has been produced through gel spinning and has specific strength 15 times higher than steel wire, with excellent UV resistance and chemical resistance,” a press release from the company stated.

“Moreover, since it has excellent abrasion resistance and can be used in extremely harsh conditions, the scope of application will be widened," it added.

According to Dongyang, it is the only company in the world which can supply HDPE yarns in all range of tensile strength since it has developed not only gel spun UHMWPE yarn, but also melt spun HDPE yarn.

Earlier, UHMWPE yarns and melt spun HDPE yarn were all imported due to the limitation of domestic technology.

“Moreover, the development of the new applications using high tenacity HDPE yarns has been too slow since the import volume was very limited,” it observed.

Miracle was specialised in order to develop customised products by supplying excellent tenacity, creep characteristics, coating performance and customised specification.

According to Donyang, this product can be applied to military supplies such as bulletproof jacket and bulletproof helmet, leisure and sports goods.

It can also be used for high performance rope, high performance fishing net, industrial safety gloves, protection gears, mountain bike frame, rock climbing rope, paragliding and fibre reinforced concrete.

Other applications includes, high performance motorcycle helmet, baseball stadium net, dental floss, gastroscope wire, industrial fabric, non-woven fabric, staple fibre, suture, etc.

A Dongyang official said, “Although we are the leader in Korea, we still have a long way to go in the global market.”
