Dow Building Solutions said it has expanded capacity of FR-122P Polymeric Flame Retardant (PolyFR) in time for the August 2015 HBCD phase-out deadline set by the European Union.

Dow Building, a subsidiary of Dow Chemical has expanded capacity at ICL Industrial Products production facility in Israel, which is a global leader in the production of flame retardants.

“We are confident that the additional capacity will enable XPS and EPS manufacturers to adopt the new technology in time for the August deadline,” said Francisco Gonçalves at Dow Building Solutions.

In March 2011, Dow Global Technologies LLC (DGTL), a subsidiary of Dow, announced the invention and development of PolyFR.

According to Dow, PolyFR is a stable, high molecular weight, non-PBT substance with an enhanced environment, health and safety profile compared to current alternatives.

“The additive provides a fire safety solution for XPS and EPS foams enabling them to meet increasing demands of global energy efficiency regulations and sustainable building design,” it added.

Dow Building Solutions provides energy saving solutions to the construction sector, which began with the launch of its flagship Styrofoam Brand Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Foam Insulation.

A market-facing business unit of Dow Chemical, Dow Building Solutions offers insulation, air sealing and weatherisation solutions.

This is backed by building science expertise to help builders, designers and architects reduce energy costs and protect against wind and rain, while contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. (AR)
