Evonik develops new hollow fibre membrane

Germany based specialty chemicals leader Evonik Industries has developed a new hollow fibre membrane, Sepuran N2 for efficient separation of nitrogen from air. Evonik's Sepuran N2 membranes offers lower cost solution due to the high capacity and low air requirement.

The Sepuran N2 hollow-fibre membrane consists of polyimide, a high-performance polymer that is highly chemically and thermally stable. The hollow fibres are bundled together and are embedded in a resin developed specially for the purpose. The membrane module 1.3 m long, contains several fine tubes, each of diameter 0.5 mm.

“With Sepuran N2 we plan to extend our technology position in customised membrane gas separation systems,” said Goetz Baumgarten, who is responsible for global Sepuran business in Evonik's resource efficiency segment.

For separation of nitrogen, compressed air is fed into the hollow fibre membranes. Due to their smaller size, oxygen molecules can pass through the membrane more easily than nitrogen molecules. Compared with other conventional membrane systems the new technology requires fewer modules and less air. The advantages of this new technology over the current membrane processes are its greater flexibility and lower costs.

“Sepuran N2 is efficient and flexible. This membrane module from Evonik is distinguished by low investment costs, very low operating costs, and low maintenance expenditure,” added Baumgarten. (NA)
