Hexcel Corporation, a leading advanced composites company, has won the JEC Innovation Award for Aerospace at JEC Europe 2015, accompanied by award partners Stelia Aerospace, Coriolis Composites, and CompositeAdour.

The four companies collaborated on the design, manufacture, and testing of a self-stiffened fuselage panel demonstrator made with Hexcel’s HiTape. The panel demonstrates that HiTape meets the performance requirements for aircraft primary structures, including damage tolerance, Hexcel said in a press release.

HiTape advanced dry carbon fibre reinforcements are designed for the automated manufacture of preforms at very high deposition rates. The preforms are infused with Hexcel’s HexFlow RTM6 resin in a cost-efficient, out of autoclave process. Parts produced with HiTape reinforcements and Hexcel’s HexFlow infusion resins can be up to 30mm thick with a 58 to 60 per cent fibre volume content, resulting in mechanical properties that are as high as those achieved with primary structure prepregs.

Hexcel Corporation develops, manufactures, and markets lightweight, high-performance structural materials, including carbon fibres, reinforcements, prepregs, honeycomb, matrix systems, adhesives, and composite structures, used in commercial aerospace, space and defence and industrial applications.
