Mafissa to invest in bicomponent fibers production

Manufactura de Fibras Sinteticas S.A. “Mafissa,” the biggest polyester fiber, yarn and chip manufacturer in South America, will invest $15 million in a new mill located in La Plata, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The new plan will contain a completely new manufacturing line for bicomponent fibers in order to increase significantly its present capacity production of 60,000 tons of polyester staple and yarns.

Mafissa will produce different types of bicomponent fibers for a number of purposes and applications, but the primary use will be the manufacture of nonwovens to be used within the hygiene industry mainly within the Mercosur area and also for wadding materials.

The imports of bicomponent fiber have been steadily increasing along the last years in the Mercosur free trade area and are expected to increase at a higher rate in the years to come, following demand for better products. This market expansion is supported by the local Government initiatives to boost local manufacture and replace imports.

"With this new investment, we will be able to offer a complete package of different materials, most of them based on PET and HDPE, for the markets where we are presently active, being better prepared for the new market demands," said Jorge Curi, president of Mafissa.

Intially Mafissa will produce 2500 tn/month of HDPE/PET + HDPE/PP, out of that 1300 for South America and 1200 for exportation.Mafissa is also interested in exporting after June 2012, Bicomponent fibres, Virgin and recycled PET fibres, Polymer pellets.
