Mundal Group uses DIAB composite material for fishing boat

Mundal Group, a quality provider of commercial fishing boats and vessels, has launched M/S Bluefin, a 35 metre purse seiner built in DIAB composite material.

Composite boats are more durable and economically effective than their wooden or steel-clad counterparts. As wooden and steel-clad boats are much heavier, they cannot reach such a high speed with the same engine. Hence, the boat uses much less oil for each journey.

In M/S Bluefin, Divinycell core material is used throughout the entire vessel. Used in conjunction with strong laminate, it offers the ideal combination of strength, stiffness, and roughness.

M/S Bluefin, owned by Nye Bluefin AS in Nekkøy, is a purse seiner, the most effective type of vessel to catch aggregating species near the surface. A purse seiner fishes with a net called a seine that is laid out in a circle around a school of fish and drawn into a purse that closes the bottom, trapping the catch inside. The boat is very stable since it has to carry a heavy load.

With three new cargo holds added, M/S Bluefin’s total load capacity is around 300 square metres. The rebuilt seiner features a new deckhouse on the port side and an extended dayroom. It is equipped for 11 people and operates for traditional inshore fishing.

Steinar Nekkøy, managing director at Nye Bluefin AS said, “We have wanted a larger vessel for quite some time now. Thanks to Mundal Boat, M/S Bluefin is not only bigger but also more seaworthy. We are confident that it will fulfil all our expectations and be a valuable asset for future operations.”

DIAB is known for the development of composite core materials, supplying a wide range of markets including marine, aerospace, transportation, and industry. (GK)
