Nonwoven membranes give energy-efficient buildings: EDANA

EDANA, the leading global association serving the nonwovens and related industries, has launched the new infographics for pitched roofing in its “Life with Nonwovens” series, as part of its study into durable nonwoven applications.

Nonwovens are used as membranes in pitched roofing, or as facers in external walls. These membranes are often a combination of materials. Nonwoven-film membranes contribute to a lower air exchange between inside and outside and therefore reduce the energy needed to heat the building.

The newly built pitched roofs are generally insulated, and vapour permeable membranes used to protect both the building and its occupants. Nonwovens for pitched roofing offer a solution more than twice as effective as other alternatives. The use of nonwovens in pitched roof membranes instead of asphalted cardboard enables an annual benefit of 160,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalents, equal to 975 trips around the moon, or 50,000 less cars on the road.

Pitched roof nonwoven carriers support the mechanical strength of the membrane, while the film keeps water from coming in and lets water vapour out.

250 million square meters (35,000 tonnes) of membranes are used for pitched proofing every year in Europe, enough to cover more than 60,000 football fields. (GK)
