Toray to hike PP spunbond capacity at Indonesian facility

Toray Advanced Materials Korea (TAK), a subsidiary of Japan based, Toray Industries will expand production capacity of high-performance polypropylene (PP) spunbond at its Indonesia plant.

TAK will hike PP spunbond output at P.T. Toray Polytech Jakarta (TPJ) by 18,000 tons per year. After the expansion, production capacity at TPJ will reach 37,000 tons per year.

The addition of this new capacity will boost Toray Group PP spunbond production capacity to about 153,000 tons per year and is expected to start commercial production in September 2016.

Toray said, demand for disposable baby diapers is forecast to rapidly grow in ASEAN countries with the improvement in the people’s lifestyle and incomes.

In addition, demand for disposable diapers for old people is also expected to expand in developed and semi-developed countries in East Asia due to the advent of declining birthrates and aging societies.

It is expected that demand for PP spunbond, the main raw material for making diapers, is expected to grow to 660,000 tons per year in 2016 from 493,000 tons in 2013 and to 936,000 tons in 2020.

In response to this robust demand, Toray Group has been expanding the production capacities of its PP spunbond production bases in Korea, China and Indonesia in advance.

In June 2013, TPJ’s first line started operations and Toray’s Chinese subsidiary, Toray Polytech (Nantong) Co., Ltd., will start operation of a new production line later this month.

According to Toray, it will enhance its PP spunbond supply through its three facilities in Korea, China and Indonesia. (AR)
