Trevira to show technical application fibres at Techtextil

Since, 46 per cent of all filaments and fibres made by Trevira were used in technical textile applications in 2014, Germany based Trevira is again exhibiting at the Techtextil Fair at Frankfurt.

The fibre producer seeks to strengthen its existing contacts with manufacturers of technical textiles and nonwovens and gain new customers.

As at Index 2014, Trevira plans to make a joint presentation with its owner, Indorama Ventures and sister companies FiberVisions and Wellman.

“The combined stand offers a wide portfolio of man-made fibres, displaying the strengths of the individual partners,” Trevira said in a press release.

In the fibre sector the focus for Trevira lies in customised special solutions in polyester, PLA and bico fibres.

Fibres from biopolymers like PLA and Ingeo for a variety of non-woven applications make up an essential element in the product programme.

Initially used principally in hygiene products, bico fibres are appearing more and more in developments for customer projects aimed at technical applications, like filtration or insulation.

In flame retardant fibres, Trevira intends to extend business particularly in nonwovens, and also concentrate on customised applications in soundproofing, insulation and applications in the automotive sector.

Additional focus will be on short cut fibres for a great variety of end uses, such as wallpaper and food packaging.

Trevira filaments cover a steadily growing spectrum of applications in technical textiles for standards, but also for niche products and for requirements that are constantly becoming more specialised.

Technical applications for Trevira filaments are in special yarns for medicinal and hygiene textiles, together with textured PBT filaments as basis for plasters and bandages containing active ingredients.

“Meanwhile, demand has been rising steadily for PLA multifilaments as flame retardant Trevira yarns have become the standard material in textiles for exhibition construction and print base,” it added.

Hybrid yarns for stiffened materials constitute a rapidly growing specialty, where a yarn from a co-polyester filament, modified at melting point, is combined with another yarn.

According to demand, this can be either a Trevira standard or flame retardant filament, while, combinations with high tenacity filaments, possibly glass and carbon filaments are also conceivable.

Textiles made from these components can be shaped almost at will, but in a controlled manner and they can be fixed in this form.

In the composites segment such intermediate products are designated thermoplastic prepregs; materials much in demand in modern automotive construction.

It added, “In economic and ecological terms, materials in Trevira hybrid yarns provide an interesting alternative to materials with acrylic coatings.”

Sewing threads for multiaxial fabrics constitute a further application area for specialised Trevira filaments. (AR)
