Bangladesh Govt to enforce Mandatory Jute Packaging Act

A law was formulated over a year back making the use of jute bags in packing food stuff and farm produces mandatory, but the much-hailed law is hardly practiced, reports UNB.

Although most of the government agencies have almost come under the purview of the law, the private enterprises and businesses are yet to fully follow the law.

Under the circumstances, the Ministry of Textiles and Jute is going to sit with the relevant stakeholders, including the Bangladesh Rice Mills Association and Bangladesh Cold Storage Association, next week to discuss matters relating to proper enforcement of the law, said Md Ashraful Moqbul, secretary of Textiles and Jute.

If no fruitful result comes from the meeting, the government would go for enforcing the law and put in place mobile courts in this connection, he said.

He said the Department of Food and Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) has already started using the jute bags.

Bangladesh Sugar and Food Industries Corporation (BSFIC) said the Ministry that they would use jute bags. The Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) has also been asked to increase the use of jute bags.

Sources at the ministry said the Department of Food purchased 0.18 million pieces of jute bags and 1.20 million pieces of synthetic bags in the fiscal year 2009-10.
