BASF to launch fire-protective solutions at Chinaplas

BASF is set to launch a new range of applications that help improve fire protection in China, both in fire-fighting and fire prevention, at Chinaplas 2016 expo, at Shanghai new international expo centre, from April 25 to 28, 2016.

At Chinaplas 2016, BASF will showcase a fire-fighter's helmet made with thermoplastics Ultrason and Ultramid for the first time in Asia. The helmet visor and eye protector, made with Ultrason, has a working temperature of up to 220°C, excellent inherent flammability properties and good impact strength. Due to Ultrason's high light transmission, fire-fighters can see clearly through the transparent face mask even in harsh conditions. Meanwhile, the flame-retardant 25 per cent glass fibre-reinforced thermoplastic Ultramid used in the shell of the helmet is highly impact-resistant and has very good mechanical properties. Consequently, it protects fire-fighters from falling debris. The helmet is also lightweight, weighing around 1.4 kg, which makes it very comfortable to wear, according to a press release.

BASF will also show Flamestab NOR 116 flame retardant to make shade nets safer when used for building construction, renovation, and maintenance. This flame retardant is non-halogenated, and it does not interact with Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer (HALS). It is also melt processable and does not reduce the mechanical properties of the polymer. Flamestab NOR 116 fulfils various international norms and standards for flame resistance including FMVSS 302, DIN 4102 (B2 classification requirements), UL-94-VTM, and NFPA 701.

At Chinaplas 2016, BASF will also show a high-pressure fire-fighting hose made with BASF's Elastollan thermoplastic polyurethane, which lasts longer and resists punctures and abrasions. In this application, Elastollan is applied on the top and hotmelt lining layers of the fire hose. Elastollan provides an impressively high burst-pressure rating, yet it also ensures a high degree of flexibility for kink resistance and ease of coiling. It can also be stored wet without rotting and can resist exposure to sunlight and chemicals. (GK)
