Delegates attending a day-long workshop on jute geotextiles in Patna earlier this month endorsed and urged the Bihar state government to use jute geotextiles for road construction under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

The workshop was attended by over 100 civil engineers, in addition to officials from the Bihar government, Indian government’s ministry of textiles, National Jute Board, Indian Jute Mills Association, and Indian Jute Industries Research Association.

Speakers at the workshop said jute can be put into use widely in strengthening rural infrastructure in Bihar. They deliberated on the need of jute geotextiles and its efficiency in protection of banks and beds of waterways, management of slopes, and strengthening of roads.

Jute geotextiles have been used in about 200 projects across India and they have been found to be cost-effective and environment-friendly, said experts. They urged the Bihar government to expedite the use of jute geotextiles in at least 15 per cent of road construction under the PMGSY.

An advantage of jute geotextiles is that they can be tailor-made as per the specific technical requirements in a particular project.

The jute industry in India is mainly concentrated in the eastern part and employs more than three lakh people. (RKS)
