The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) has praised the initiatives undertaken by the Kerala State Co-operative Coir Marketing Federation (Coirfed) for popularizing coir geo-textile applications in several villages across Kerala.

NCSTC has recently begun exploring and documenting the science communication initiatives being carried out in different states in order to identify and further promote innovative trends at grassroots level.

Coir geo-textile applications have been implemented by Coirfed in 575 villages across Kerala as part of the state government's green initiative scheme.

The initiative is aimed at finding markets for special varieties of coir and to help the coir industry, which is currently affected by recessionary trends. The initiative has helped Coirfed to gain orders worth Rs. 30 million.

NCSTC said the initiative of Coirfed is a unique technology popularization initiative which would go a long way in local area development.

Coirfed is the Apex Federation of Co-operative Societies engaged in the manufacture of coir and coir products. It is also entrusted with the task of marketing the produce of the Co-operative Societies.

NCSTC is the apex body of Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for science communication as well as popularization and inculcation of scientific and technological temper among masses.
