Speaking at a seminar in Vijaywada, the Minister of State for Textiles, Ms Panabaka Lakshmi exhorted the farmers to use agro-textiles in their farms in order to improve yield and in turn boost the productivity of their standing crops.

She was speaking at a seminar organized by Synthetic Art Silk Mills Research Association (SASMIRA) in association with the Bangalore 'Office of the Textile Commissioner' and Department of Agriculture, Andhra Pradesh.

She said that agro-textiles are used to prevent growth of harmful weeds in agriculture and preliminary studies reveal that using agro-fabrics of a definitive gauge will help boost crop productivity between 20-40 percent.

She advocated the use of products like shade netting and thermal screens, which can save up to 40 percent energy in heating greenhouses, along with which using agro-textiles would improve the quality of fruit and improve uniformity in colour.

Mr Joshi, Textiles Commissioner spoke about the various kinds of agro-textiles available like nets, sheets, woven, non-woven, knitted, novel and coated, which are now being used in agriculture, horticulture and animal husbandry to derive good yields.

The meeting was attended by agriculture officers and farmers from all the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and also addressed by the likes of Director of SASMIRA, Mr Gangopadhyay and President Mr Doshi.
