TenCate Advanced Composites said its materials have been used in the innovative A5 Amphibious Sport Aircraft manufactured by ICON Aircraft, which recently had its first flight and successful unveiling.

The first of the Amphibious Sport Aircraft makes extensive use of advanced composites from TenCate to achieve high strength, lightweight and outstanding performance in a wide range of environmental conditions, the advanced composites producer said.

ICON Aircraft is a consumer sport plane manufacturer founded in response to the new sport flying category. ICON’s first plane is the A5, an amphibious sport aircraft that fuses aeronautical engineering with product design.

“The A5’s development has been a massive undertaking. The ICON team worked tirelessly to make the A5 a reality. With ESN-1 complete and ESN-2 under construction, we are now looking toward FAA approval, after which we will begin customer deliveries,” says ICON CTO Matthew Gionta.

The aircraft company claims it has already received market response for more than 1,400 A5 positions.

Steve Mead, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TenCate Advanced Composites said, “We congratulate the ICON Aircraft team on their successes. It is an exciting entry in the sport flying class, combining world-class design with the versatility of an amphibious aircraft”.

TenCate Advanced Composites is a leading manufacturer of thermoset and thermoplastic composites materials serving the aircraft, satellite and industrial markets and has production facilities in Europe and North America. (AR)
