AMI seeks anti-dumping duty on US silica fabric imports

The largest US manufacturer of silica fabric, Auburn Manufacturing Inc. (AMI) has requested the US government to impose antidumping and countervailing duties on certain amorphous silica fabric imported from China.

In a press release, AMI said, it has filed a petition with the US Department of Commerce and the US International Trade Commission requesting imposition of antidumping and countervailing duties.

AMI operates two manufacturing plants in Maine and is the principal supplier of amorphous silica fabric to the US Navy.

According to the company, it has lost a significant number of sales to Chinese imports due to increasingly low import prices.

AMI believes that imports of silica fabric from China are being dumped in the US market at unfairly low prices and has provided evidence that the Chinese government is providing unfair subsidies to its silica fabric producers.

AMI is of the opinion that these imports are not compliant with either the Buy American Act, which requires over 50 per cent US content.

It also added that these imports are also not compliant with the Berry Amendment, which generally requires textiles purchased with funds allocated by the Department of Defense to be 100 per cent of US origin.

“Without relief from dumped and subsidised low-priced Chinese imports, it will become increasingly difficult for AMI to continue making this product,” the company stated.

“This is the latest segment of the US textile industry to be replaced by Chinese imports as a result of unfair trade practices,” AMI informed.

“In the long run, if these unfair practices are not curbed, the US military will suffer because it will be unable to source these products from US companies,” it observed.

AMI also said that it looks forward to investigations by the two US government agencies to confirm AMI's evidence of dumping, subsidisation and injury.

It also urged the US government to impose antidumping and countervailing duties to offset the injurious effects of these dumped and subsidised Chinese imports.

Founded in 1979, AMI is a developer, manufacturer, and marketer of textile products for hundreds of extreme temperature industrial applications throughout the world.

These include welding protection, industrial insulation, safety apparel, gaskets and seals, and other maintenance, repair, operations and production and OEM applications. (AR)
