All the eight Centres of Excellence for technical textiles have established incubation centres, Textile Commissioner Kavita Gupta has said.

The Union Government allocated Rs 17.40 crore this financial year for setting up incubation centres for technical textiles, Gupta said in Coimbatore recently while inaugurating the joint technological conference of textile research associations.

Technical textiles are products manufactured for non-aesthetic purposes, including protective clothing and textiles used in applications such as automotive and medical.

Gupta said the incubation centres will have plug and play facilities and all the eight Centres of Excellence for technical textiles have established the centres.

The Textiles Ministry has allocated Rs 152 crore under the Technology Mission for Technical Textiles for the eight centres of excellence and 76 per cent of the funds have been utilised. “Funds are not a constraint,” she said, and urged the centres to utilise allocated funds.

The centres have facilities for research and development, testing, standardising products and commercial production at the incubation facilities.

Gupta described technical textiles as the future of the industry. She said the market size is projected to increase from Rs 75,925 crore in 2012-13 to Rs 1,58,540 crore in 2016-17, at a growth rate of 20 per cent year-on-year. (SH)
